I have a Dell A940 printer/scanner/fax machine,?

It will scan, it will print a letter I put on the scanner, but if I type on a notepad it will not print it. It keeps saying color cartridge gone, will I don't want the color cartridge, I want to type up a letter and print it in black. I type a letter on notpad, and checked print, but it just slides the paper through with nothing one it. I know there is some step I am missing, but what is it. Thanks a bunch to anyone who can help me.

umm well when you go into print somewhere in there when it verifys you will see print preferences go into that and find gray scale and then click print from black print cartage only click apply then ok then apply then print and it should print you can also adjust how fast it prints if your just printing notepad then you can switch your printer to fast draft and it will fly those pages out so fast you'll think its a magic machine.
